M.O. Hammond diary, 1909

M. O. Hammond was a reporter for the Toronto Globe and a skilled photogrrapher. Collection consists of a diary of his participation in the roundup of the Michel Pable buffalo herd in 1909. (SC 1218) This collection is a portion of a diary (April 30-June 14, 1909), that he kept during his participation in the last Montana buffalo roundup. He accompanied Howard Douglas, superintendent of Banff National Park in Canada, to photograph the roundup and sale of the Michel Pablo herd. One of the cowboys working in the roundup was artist Charles M. Russell.

Melvin Ormond Hammond was born in Clarkson, Ontario, on July 17, 1876, the son of Alvin and Catharine (Nauman) Hammond. He began his newspaper career as a 14 year old working for the Oakville Star. Three years later he went to work for the Toronto Globe. He became a political reporter for the Globe. He also became a skilled photographer and the author of three books. He died in 1934.
